Terrible tragedy – woman shot in home invasion.
UPDATE FROM MATT RUBEN: Apparently the victim and the perpetrator were previously acquainted. So it was not a random incident, i.e. there's not someone going around doing random home invasions.
Police: Woman, 26, critical after Northern Liberties shooting
Tuesday, July 30, 2013A 26-year-old woman was hospitalized Tuesday night in critical but stable condition after police say a man forced his way into her Northern Liberties [on Girard Ave. near Hope St.] apartment and shot her in the head.Police sources said the woman, who is transgender, answered a knock at the door to her apartment on Girard Avenue near Hope Street shortly after 9 p.m. to find a gunman at the door. The man forced her upstairs at gunpoint to her third-floor apartment, where he pistol-whipped her and shot her in the head, Chief Inspector Scott Small said.Inside the apartment, police found the victim bleeding from the head wound and at least one spent shell casing from a gun. The woman was rushed to Hahnemann University Hospital, where she remained late Tuesday night. Police said the bullet lodged in her brain, but she is expected to survive. It was unclear what the motive behind the shooting was, but the shooting comes on the heels of the gruesome murder of Diamond Woods, another transgender woman, who authorities said was murdered and dismembered by Charles "Nolan" Sargent after he picked her up in Hunting Park for a sexual encounter.Woods' murder devastated the LGBT community in the city, and a vigil for the woman was held last week at LOVE Park. Organizers there called for an end to violence against transgender people. Tuesday night's shooting remains under investigation, and no arrests have been made.See news footage at:http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/dncrime/Woman-hospitalized-after-being-shot-inside-Northern-Liberties-apartment.html#ic4K5rXlp2opczBp.99
