How to Legally Prepare Mattresses for Disposal

From The Streets Department:Acting Streets Commissioner David J. Perri has announced changes in the Sanitation regulations governing how mattresses and box springs are placed out for curbside collection. These changes affect residents and small businesses that receive City Sanitation services.

Effective December 1 – Residents will be required to bag and seal mattressesand box springs in mattress covers in order to be collected.

This regulation is being instituted to protect against the spread of bed bugs. Mattresses and box springs that are not properly bagged and sealed will not be collected nor accepted at our Sanitation Convenience Centers. Mattress bags are available at many retail stores and on-line.Below photos are examples of approved mattress disposal bags. You can find mattress disposal bags at most major retailers and home improvement stores, such as Home Depot, Lowe's, Kmart, Amazon.com, etc.The Streets Department thanks citizens for their cooperation as we continuously work to provide CLEAN and SAFE STREETS.For more information, visit philadelphiastreets.com/mattress-removal.aspx.  —
