Two Simple Steps to Help Yourself and Your Neighbors with the Storm

Our area will feel effects from Tropical Storm Sandy from Sunday evening through most of Tuesday. Hopefully the effects will be modest, but moderately high winds and sustained, very heavy rains are possible. For many reasons, our community is at some risk of flooding, on streets and in basements.

What can you do to help?

(1) Clear outdoor storm drains. Take a quick walk around your block. If you see leaves, trash or other debris blocking storm drains or gathered along the curb where water runs towards the drain, please take a minute and clear it away. (2) Avoid non-essential water use. Because Philly's sewer system combines storm water and household waste water in the same pipes, you can reduce the likelihood of flooding by not running the dishwasher, doing laundry, and so on, during periods of very heavy rain. You'll be doing a great service to yourself and your neighbors. Finally, call 311 first thing Monday to report any seriously blocked sewer drains. You will be given a ticket number. Then e-mail trash@NLNA.org with the ticket number and description of the problem. We will follow up.We've already notified our Water Dept. contacts about some problem locations.
