Penn Herb Company Building a New Flagship Store in Northern Liberties
Founded in 1924 by a respected naturopath, Dr. Konstanty Kalkosinski, the first Penn Herb store was located on Girard Avenue in Philadelphia. In 1940, Penn Herb moved to its current location at Second and Spring Garden in Northern Liberties. The retail store has remained at that location, where a loyal following of walk-in customers continues to pack the store regularly."We wanted to give our customers a larger, more spacious store, with more choices and better product selection. It’s always been our desire to help educate our customers about herbs and natural remedies. A new, larger store will enable us to do this more fully,” says William Betz Jr., CEO and co-owner of Penn Herb Company, Ltd.The new building, known as Liberties Gateway, will be a three story mixed-use building totaling 35,000 sq. ft. In addition to the Penn Herb flagship store, there will be additional commercial space available as well as boutique apartments.Construction completion and the new store opening is scheduled for the first quarter of 2013. The planned closing date for the old store is August 10, 2012, and demolition will begin shortly thereafter. In the meantime, Penn Herb will serve customers out of the factory store at 10601 Decatur Road, Philadelphia and through our website.
