The event is a FREE, all-day celebration of the community and culture on 2nd Street, with restaurants and beer gardens, four stages, crafts, kids programs, workshops, green initiatives, and a critically-acclaimed musical lineup.“This really is a unique, grass-roots neighborhood endeavor, putting a spotlight on the businesses, artists, and community members that make Northern Liberties so special,” remarked Owen Kamihira, owner of Bar Ferdinand and El Camino Real. Kamihira is a founding sponsor, along with Oron Daskal of North Bowl, and William Reed of Standard Tap and Johnny Brenda’s. Their restaurants and a host of others in the heart of Northern Liberties ground the festival in food, merriment, and music. The 2013 installment marks the third year of unique partnership with the Philadelphia Folksong Society (PFS) in programming and producing the 7-block party between Germantown and Green Streets on 2nd Street. The Low Anthem returns to Philly for the first time since hiatus, promising another unforgettable headliner performance, which in previous years included the likes of indie goddess tUNeYaRdS and Philly heroes Man Man. The lineup currently boasts a who’s who of Philly-centric acts designed to make waves in the musical community and among the massive audience expected to attend. “In keeping the ‘partnership’ focus of the day, we work with organizations and promoters throughout the city to make the festival burst at the seams,” recounted Levi Landis, Executive Director of the PFS.  Programming partners include Point Entertainment (the Folk Festival programming team) and Electric Factory, along with Johnny Brenda’s, Philly School of Rock, and others.  Landis continues, “This is such an exciting opportunity for us in addition to our annual Philadelphia Folk Festival.  For 2nd Street Fest, we can work with partners to push our boundaries, presenting national headliners like The Low Anthem alongside with local favorites in everything from traditional folk to hip hop, World, jazz, DJs, indie and R&B.”While the 20- and 30-somethings will mark August 4th on their iCals for the hip musical entertainment, Nicky Devine, who steps out of her normal day job at Johnny Brenda’s and Weathervane Music to once again serve as Festival Coordinator, reminds “2nd Street welcomes families and attendees of all ages by offering kids concerts and activities, workshops, craft vendors and demonstrations, jams, and other programming gems.” Craft vendors will line the streets; an army of volunteers will assist the crowd of 20,000; and beer gardens and restaurants will feature Yuengling, Sly Fox, and Sierra Nevada along with local food and beer specials.Devine goes on to explain one of the new initiatives to provide the option of a VIP experience.  “This year we have introduced a ‘Friends of 2nd Street’ ticket option, which includes open bar and food options, meet-and-greet with headlining artists, a special VIP viewing tent, a 2nd Street goody bag, and more. Tickets are on-sale via Philadelphia Folksong Society’s website and on the 2nd Street Festival Facebook page. All proceeds benefit PFS and The Northern Liberties Neighborhood Association who help make the Festival possible. For more information on 2ND STREET FESTIVAL or to purchase your VIP “Friend of 2nd Street” ticket, visit www.2ndStFestival.org or call 1-800-556-FOLK.
