Deadline: Get Your Property Tax "Homestead Exemption" in Now
July 31 DeadlineThe City's Property Tax situation remains in flux, with new property assessments not yet released; the new tax rate unknown; and the PA legislature still having to act in order to make some of the City's proposals legal.But there's one thing you can - and must - do now if you are a homeowner: fill out and submit a Homestead Exemption form.If a property is your primary residence, you can get a tax exemption on a portion of its value (current proposals in City Council range from $15,000 to $40,000). In other words, for tax purposes, the value of your house is reduced, resulting in a lower tax bill.The PA legislature has to approve a Homestead Exemption for Philly, and they haven't done so yet. But in case they do, the City has posted a form you can fill out to apply for your exemption.
